Plant essential oils are frequently associated with and commonly used in aromatherapy. They exhibit relaxing, analgesic, antiphlogistic, and antiseptic activity. This is, however, not the major field in which they are used. More and more frequently, they are employed in medicine and dentistry as alternative therapies. It is mostly their antiseptic effect that is utilized. They are also known for their antioxidant activity and are often used in food preservation, as spasmolytic agents, and in local anaesthesia.

Aromatherapy refers to the medicinal or therapeutic use of essential oils absorbed through the skin or olfactory system. Essential oils, which are derived from plants, are used to treat illness as well as to enhance physical and psychological well-being. Some studies suggest that olfactory stimulation related to aromatherapy can result in immediate reduction in pain, as well as changing physiological parameters such as pulse, blood pressure, skin temperature, and brain activity.

Given complications, it is not surprising that obesity is classified as a non-infectious disease. Obesity may induce cardiovascular disease and other metabolic implications including hypertension, reduced serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL cholesterol), and increased waist circumference. Obesity primarily results from excessive calorie consumption (increased food intake) and/or insufficient calorie expenditure (reduced metabolic and physical activity). Secondary causes may be attributed to a genetic or endocrine dysfunction, such as hypothyroidism, insulin resistance, and hyperleptinemia.
